Benefits of a Crawler Skid Steer Loader

Whether working on a construction project or simply moving dirt in a yard, the right equipment makes all the difference. A crawler skid steer loader is a powerful yet compact piece of machinery with the versatility to do it all. It can dig, move materials and dump in a single movement, eliminating the need for multiple machines on site like excavators, telehandlers, backhoes or CTLs. However, there are many different loader types on the market and each one has its own advantages and limitations. It is important to evaluate each machine’s undercarriage design, performance on different surfaces, manoeuvrability, ground disturbance, stability and long-term cost implications before deciding which type of loader will work best for your project.

Crawler loaders use continuous tracks to provide superior traction over wheeled loaders. This allows them to handle heavier, more powerful loads and work on tough terrain, such as muddy or uneven surfaces. This also increases their ability to climb slopes or other obstacles, making them suitable for heavy-duty projects in forestry and mining.

In addition, crawler skid steer loaders offer better maneuverability than wheeled models, with a tight turning radius and the ability to drive in reverse within their own footprint. This means they can be positioned to easily grab and move materials in tight spaces. The cab design is also smaller, offering more visibility and easy access to the loader’s hydraulic systems. This helps reduce operator fatigue and increase productivity.

A crawler skid steer’s side-mounted two-piece boom is another key feature that improves its performance and working capabilities. This enables the machine to dig and swing the bucket closer to the operator, providing a larger working envelope compared to mono boom excavators. It also reduces the need to reposition the loader as the bucket works toward the machine, which is helpful for applications where space is limited and overhead clearance is restricted.

Another great benefit of a crawler skid steer is its high speed capabilities. This allows the machine to travel twice as fast as a typical mini excavator or on par with most CTLs, significantly increasing its ability to move materials and complete jobs in less time. The increased speed can also help minimize wear on the loader’s rubber tracks and tires, increasing overall durability.

Crawler skid steer loaders also offer a wide range of attachments, which further enhance their versatility. They can be used for digging, hauling, transporting, dumping and even snow removal. Some manufacturers even offer a rear-facing backhoe, which eliminates the need for a separate backhoe when excavating or loading material.

With the proper suite of attachments and a cutting-edge quick-coupler, a crawler skid steer can replace a variety of other equipment on the jobsite. This can save valuable time and money, while reducing the number of machines needed on the site. For example, a skid-steer can replace the need for an excavator and a telehandler when moving materials or building a backyard pool. This can save contractors significant amounts of time and money and allow them to finish the project faster.
